Jingles settled herself on a pale blue side chair in Gustave’s private quarters in the attic. Portraits of cats, all framed and standing on gold easels, dotted the room. “Are those your family?”

“Yes.” Gustave wandered over to a painting of a female cat. “This is my Molly,” he said, pointing to the portrait. “And over here we have one of our litter.”

“You had children?”

“I did.”

Jingles stared at the paintings. “Why aren’t you in any of them?” She thought parents were usually close with their kids.

“I died before the portraits were painted.”

Pain sliced through Jingles’s heart. “I’m sorry that happened.” Her whiskers twitched. “Where are your children now?”

Gustave turned away from the paintings and gazed at the floor. “When the Pipps-Catwells, the people who adopted me, died, my Molly and our litter went to live with another human family. But since I was already a ghost by that time and bound to this house, I could not follow them. Over the years, their new family moved away, and I no longer heard the clinic staff speak of them. I lost track of my family.”

She couldn’t imagine losing track of Sienna, but she did like learning that Gustave had been adopted, as that made him similar to her. “Were you fostered before being adopted?”

“No. But I was cared for by another human before coming to live with the Pipps-Catwells. The architect of this house had a feline who gave birth to a single kitten. I was that kitten. I’m afraid no one knew who my father was, and my mother passed away shortly after I was born. I had no one to care for me, so Mr. Dolph, the architect who worked long hours and found it difficult to care for a kitten, gave me to the Pipps-Catwells and I’ve been in this house ever since.”

“Did you miss the architect when he gave you away?”

“At first, but I saw him often while he worked on this house and even in later years. And by the time the building was complete, I loved the Pipps-Catwells, and we were a family. This house became my new home. And in some ways, I believe I am bound to the dwelling because of the architect, but I don’t know the specifics of why that is.”

Jingles glanced around the attic. “This is much better than a dumpster in a mall parking lot.”

Gustave trilled. “I suppose it is, Little Jingles.”

She flicked her tail. “I worry Sienna will not be able to keep me because of my magick.”

“About that,” Gustave said. “I might have a solution to your problem. If I can find the permit that protected me and my family.”

She didn’t understand. “But how can that help Sienna keep me?”

Gustave lifted his paw and spread his toes. “Take a good look, Little Jingles.”

She gasped. “You have a heart-shaped toe bean on your middle toe!”

“You are my family, Jingles. As no other lineage of magickal felines has heart-shaped toe beans but mine. It comes from my mother, who was also born to a one cat litter.
